The Futures Industry Association (FIA) is the leading trade organization for the futures, options and OTC cleared derivatives markets. FIA’s 250+ corporate members reach thousands of industry participants from more than 20 countries. Members handle over 90% of the customer funds held for trading on U.S. futures exchanges and play a critical role in reducing systemic risk in financial markets. Published bi-monthly, Futures Industry magazine provides a constant flow of information on the changing global marketplace to these industry professionals, members of Congress and regulatory agencies.
Dever Designs, a strategic graphic design firm, was hired to refresh the magazine’s brand with an eye to reinforcing its position as an industry leader and of-the-minute information resource. Developing an aesthetic appropriate to the content and improving navigation and legibility were paramount. To tackle these challenges, our team met with key editorial and production staff to help them define clear objectives that built on the findings of independent market research. New typographic treatments within a revamped grid increased legibility, while distinctive tabular devices and unexpected colors differentiated editorial content from advertising—establishing hierarchy and improving navigation. By incorporating discussion and approvals throughout the process, we built consensus among all parties and fostered their vested interest in the final product. Designing a nameplate with customized letterforms and limiting department call-outs enabled us to maximize cover real estate and place the focus on features. Our efforts distinguished Futures Industry from rival publications and enhanced reader experience.
The new design received accolades from the association, the production team—and accounting. By reducing the magazine’s trim size just 1%, we were able to cut FIA’s paper & postage costs by almost $2K per annum.

The North American Division of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church (NAD) has completed a 2-year collaboration with Dever Designs to develop its exhibit for the church's 59th General Conference Session. This quinquennial conference brings together representatives from every part of the world, attracting over 70,000 attendees.
The challenge for the design team was four-fold: create a visual identity for the NAD exhibit; design the exhibit footprint; develop graphics and collateral materials; and coordinate with NAD personnel to oversee the entire project from inception through installation.
The exhibit identity represents the NAD within the global community as it disseminates the message of the gospel through both traditional and technology-driven means. Imagery may be interpreted beyond its traditional religious symbolism to also evoke themes of outreach, humanitarian aid, and human freedom—cornerstones of the church’s mission.
With the visual direction established, the design team determined what structures were required to accommodate and unify a live performance area, a substantial marketplace, and a gallery of 32 separate ministries exhibiting under the NAD umbrella. Based on the client’s goals, recommendations were made to minimize cost while providing a striking, integrated presentation with future reuse potential. Structures were selected and positioned to enhance traffic flow, maximize lines of sight, and highlight key areas of interest. With multiple points of entry and an organic, free-form floor plan, visitors were encouraged to explore all areas of the exhibit.

Vibrant curvilinear intertwining ribbons flow throughout the report, enforcing SfN’s forward movement and energy. Dever Designs partnered with World Resources Institute and Center for Strategic & International Studies to produce a striking publication titled, “A Roadmap for a Secure, Low-Carbon Energy Economy.” This ‘roadmap’ exhibits a year-long effort by both organizations identifying a set of policies to address energy security and climate change simultaneously. It presents results and recommendations aimed at helping U.S. policymakers design balanced energy policy to meet both of these important, but occasionally conflicting, priorities.
This collaborative effort is mirrored on the cover which harmoniously showcases both WRI’s and CSIS’s style by way of imagery, color, typography and graphic elements. Circular windows offering an insight to content within punctuate a roadway backdrop. These image windows and roadway have also been carried throughout the interior, thus offering a visually unified piece. Color, typography and geometric graphic elements also unify the piece by presenting content in a structurally organized manner.

The NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®, NAR, has collaborated with Dever Designs to design and develop REALTOR® Magazine's 2009 Media Information Kit. In lieu of a newsstand presence, REALTOR® Magazine relies heavily on its media kit to promote the magazine's numerous advertising opportunities and to convey the exclusive role that the magazine plays in informing and connecting with a high-earning, entrepreneurial audience. As the primary source of information, best practices, and business development strategies in the real estate industry, REALTOR® Magazine is uniquely positioned to reach the membership of the largest professional trade association in the U.S.
The challenge of the design team was threefold: first, to create a contemporary and visually cohesive package that represented the entire range of available tools and services--in print and online--with advertising potential; second, to establish a clear hierarchy of information to both organize and highlight significant and wide-ranging content; and third, to showcase the value that REALTORS® bring to today's volatile marketplace.
Dever Designs began by developing theme language and corresponding visuals for the cover of the kit. The substantial purchasing power of NAR's nearly 1.2 million members was emphasized against the backdrop of REALTORS® as the conduit to home ownership. Bold colors and real-world imagery were balanced with subtle neutrals that readily conveyed the active nature of REALTORS® and the rapidly changing real estate industry while also providing a sense of comfort and stability. Developing a mail-slot device to spotlight key selling points throughout the kit brought the concept of "home" full circle. All elements--from the underlying structure to selected visuals--reinforced NAR's leadership in advocating the right to own, use, and transfer real property; developing standards for efficient, effective, and ethical real estate business practices; preserving the free enterprise system; and providing essential professional training and growth opportunities for its members.

Melwood is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit social service agency offering job training, employment, community living, recreation opportunities and life skills to more than 2100 people with developmental disabilities in the Washington, D.C. area. Melwood's mission is "Empowering people with developmental disabilities to enrich their own lives through its services," and its vision is "A world where people with disabilities are fully included."
Melwood views its members as an integral part of the community they work and live in; hence, they are "woven" into the community. This metaphor is utilized by Dever Designs throughout the report by the use of woven fabric as a texture on the cover and interior sidebars, and embellished with an abstract weave pattern. Images on the cover have also been seamlessly woven into one another to further enforce the concept and have been masked in a curvilinear shape alluding to Melwood's logo. Dever Designs is proud to have partnered with Melwood for the past twelve years building the foundation of their brand.
